Statistics used in the IOC's State of the Ocean Report 2024 chapter "Biodiversity knowledge and threats on marine life: Assessing no-take zones as a refuge for marine species"

This repository contains the code used to calculate statistics for each marine protected area provided by ProtectedSeas, for the IOC's State of the Ocean Report 2024 chapter "Biodiversity knowledge and threats on marine life: Assessing no-take zones as a refuge for marine species". The pipeline indexes ProtectedSeas site shapes together with OBIS and GBIF occurrence data to a common H3 spatial grid, resolves species names to accepted WoRMS taxonomy, adds IUCN Red List status, and combines everything into a SQLite database, storr caches, and RDS files with per-site species lists, which are archived to an AWS S3 bucket. The resulting statistics informed the report available on the UNESCO website.
